Just three days before the commencement of the MHC-MILO-NSC Junior Hockey League 2013, the tournament which saw a record number of 28 entries has been hit by the withdrawal of the Sabah Juniors team.
The withdrawal at the eleventh hour will no doubt create problems as the first weekend fixtures had been drawn up and the teams drawn into two groups in Division Two. But that is unlikely to see any change with Group A now having only 9 teams instead of 10 as opposed to Group B.
"We are unablke to raise a team as the Sabah Education Department has rejected permission for us to field school players in the MJHL,," said Sabah HA Secretary Aftar Singh Bhal.
"It is not easy for teams from East Malaysia to play in the MJHL as there are logistics issues, like arranging for the players to attend classes while away. We regret the decision to withdraw and understand that the MHC can take action against us, but we plead for understanding as this is beyond our control.
"There are limited players here in Sabah and try as we did, w just could not find the replacements as we received the notification from the Education Department today."
Sabah did well in their maiden appearance of the MJHL in 2010 when they energed Division Two champions with the team based in Pandamaran, Klang. However they opted to sit out the last two years.
Sabah were to open their accounts against PHA-Anderson Juniors at the National hockey Stadium this Friday.
